英語の先生
子供に英語を教える先生たちが数年ごとに姿を消していっている。
English teachers who teach to kids have been disappearing every few years.
そのときはまだ理由がわからなかった。
I didn't know why at that time.
でも今ははっきりとわかる。
But now I know it.
学校、子供、親そしてわれわれ講師が複雑に絡んでいるのだ。
School, kids and their parents have to be addressed to explain this complexity.
まず学校は、なるべく多くの生徒を確保したい。
Schools want as many students as possible in the first place.
子供の要望は主に３つに分かれる。英語を勉強したくない、もっと英語が知りたい、あるいは楽しい時間をすごせればそれでいいという具合だ。
Attitudes of kids are roughly divided into three groups; they don't wanna study!; they want to know more about English; they just want to have fun.
親は子どもに中学に行く前に英語を習わせたいケースと、英語がしゃべれるようになってほしいという願いがある。
Parents want their kids to study English before junior high school or to be able to speak English in future.
そして講師にとっては、英語を教えること。それだけだ。
And here comes to us English teachers. We teach English no matter what.
これらの思惑がそれぞれのまま日々英会話のレッスンが行われている。
In spite of these ongoing variety of thoughts, English lessons are still going on normally.
つきつめてみると、こういうことになる。
If I go to an extreme, it turns out to be like this.
学校にとって英語は商品である。
English is a product for school.
子供にとって英語は拘束される時間である。
It's a duration of time to be bound.
親にとって英語は夢と期待である。
It's a dream and an expectation for parents.
講師にとって英語は英語である。
English is English for teachers.
これらが組み合わさるとどんな問題が起きるか？
What might happen if these factors are mixed up?
講師が燃え尽きるのだ。
Teachers burn out.
学校の要望をかなえると、子どもと親の要望がかなわなくなる。
If we try to fullfil the desire of school, we can't fullfil that of kids and their parents.
子どもの要望をかなえると、親の要望がかなわなくなる。
If we try to fullfil the desire of kids, we can't fullfil that of their parents.
親の要望をかなえると、子どもと学校の要望がかなわなくなる。
If we try to fullfil the desire of parents, we can't fullfil that of their kids.
これらの摩擦を和らげるために我々講師という潤滑油が存在するのだが、結局潤滑油としての役割が果たせずいなくなる。
We, as teachers, exist to be a rubricating oil of these frictions and eventually are worn out due to overload.
どうにかしたいが講師にできるのはただ、実際に向き合っている子どもたちに毎回最高の時間をすごしてもらえるように努力することだけ。
Best we can do for now is to make our students happy every time. We only see their smiles to keep on going.
