I have a good news and a bad news before this year ends.

The bad one is that I twisted my right ankle when I landed at the bottom of the stairs of the main hall of Zenkoji temple.

The good one is that I did it before new year comes.

I have to be grateful on that.

Attitudes towards customers have been getting more and more like a universal mask of fake smiles.
顧客への接客態度がどんどん作り笑いの仮面を生み出している気がする。
Where are our real smiles, then?
我々の本当の笑顔は一体どこにいってしまったのか？
Why do I see more natural happy smiles in the Monzen area than in downtown?
駅前よりも門前の方が自然な笑顔を見る頻度が高いのは気のせいだろうか？
We should smile for real in private than at work as hard as we can.
なるべくなら、仕事中よりもプライベートで笑顔をたくさん作る努力をすればいいのかもしれない。

When and why did I come to think that whatever kids suggest are crazy ideas?
いつから、そしてなぜ、子どもたちがしようと言ってくることすべてが無茶なことだと思うようになったんだろう？
I have been saved by them quite a bit of time.
これまで何度もその『無茶なこと』に救われている。

Your voice tells who you are.
声は自分自身を表す。
If you say things aloud in front of anyone in any situation, you can also learn new things more easily with confidence.
どんな時でも、誰に対してもしっかりと声を出せる人は、新しいことも自信を持って学ぶことができる。
If the volume of your voice varies from situation to situation, learning gets suddenly difficult.
しかし、場面場面で声の大きさが異なってくると、学習能力に急にムラがでる。
One thing I'm sure of is that students whose voices are small show extremely poor performance in English examinations.
確実に言えることは、小声でしか英語を発音できない生徒は、試験で非常に低い点数を取るということだ。
Why?
なぜか？
Because you're not confident in pronouncing English words, you can't trust yourself in what you're learning and what to remember.
英語の発音に自信がない、それは学ぶこと、ひいては覚えるということにおいても、自分自身を信用できないからだ。
Know how you read English so that everything will turn around.
まずは英語の読み方を知ろう。それから全てが好転するだろう。

I learn as much as they do.

When we can communicate successfully only in English, I'm so happy.
英語のみで会話が進むと、とても幸せな気分になれる。
That's all that matters.

You have to pay for what you do if it's good or bad.
良きにつけ悪しきにつけ、行動には代償がつきまとう。
Doing is causing troubles.
行動によって、トラブルがつきまとう。
When there are troubles, it's when you grow.
トラブルがあるところに、成長のチャンスがある。

What is more difficult is to try to try.

Everyone knows the world we live in is filled with inequality and has been surviving somehow.
みんなこの世の中が不公平で満ちていることを知っていて、それでもなんとか生き抜いている。
The question is, "When and how should kids know this?".
問題なのは、「子どもたちはこれをいつ、そしてどうやって知るべきか？」だと思います。
Parents have a choice.
親には選択肢があります。
It's if they let their kids know or if they just don't so that they can do without seeing their kids in trouble until they forget even who they are.
子どもたちに伝えるのか、それとも自分たちが一体誰なのかも分からなくなるまで伝えない、そうすればいざ子どもたちが将来苦しんでいる姿を見なくて済むということなのか。

Worrying is our ability to prepare for danger.
心配するということは、危険に備える能力だ。
It enhances your physical strength and agility, which is meant to either fight or run from enemies.
力や機敏さが向上し、敵に立ち向かうか、逃げるのに役立つ。
It sounds cool though, it shouldn't last forever.
いいことのように聞こえるが、心配し続けるのは良くない。
The longer you worry, the higher the risk for destroying your body inside out gets.
心配している状態が続けば続くほど、体全体を蝕む危険は高まるのだ。
A holiday means nothing if you can't stop worrying.
心が休まらない休日には意味がない。

You can't memorize everything.
何でもかんでも暗記することなんてできない。
That's the idea.
それがすべてといえばすべて。
Your brain explodes if you try to do it.
そんなことすれば、脳が爆発する。
It's not your fault even if you can't memorize a lot.
別にたくさんのことを暗記できなくたって、それはあなたのせいじゃない。
It's not about memorizing.
それは暗記力の問題じゃない。
You just have no passion in whatever it is.
それがなんだったとしても、たぶんそこに情熱を感じないってこと。
Find some reason to be passionate in it so that you can learn more smoothly.
情熱を傾けられるものだと思うようになれば、もっとスムースに覚えられるはず。


 

Emotions and words that come out of your mouth are deeply linked.
抱く感情と、口から発せられる言葉は、深く繋がっている。
If you are not emotionally moved, words you read out loud don't reach others' hearts.
もし感情に変化になければ、はっきりと声に出したとしても、相手の心には届かない。
Simple words do the job only if you carry the right emotion at the right moment.
しかるべき場面で、しかるべき感情が宿っていれば、短い言葉でも充分用は足りる。

Drill of writing down words means a lot when your mindset is right.
単語の書きとりは、心構えが正しければ意味がある。
Say, you have to write down ten times for each word.
各単語を１０回ずつ書きとらないといけないとする。
At first, you need to look at samples to copy perfectly.
初めのうちは、見本を見ないと正しく書きとることはできない。
Then, at some point, you realize that you can speed up if you memorize what you are copying.
それから、ある時点で、書きとっている内容を覚えてしまえば、早く作業を終えられることに気付くのだ。
Yes, drill is meant to memorize things.
そう、書きとりは暗記するためにある。
If you don't intend to memorize, drill is nothing but a waste of time.
暗記する気がなければ、書きとりは時間の無駄以外の何物でもない。

Studying abroad is expensive.

So is to study at international school.
インターナショナルスクールも言うまでもない。
I've been trying hard to provide such service that students can experience learning English as if they are living abroad.

My next target is to battle English as a memorizing subject.
暗記科目としての「英語」との戦い、それが次のステップになると思います。
It's just a simple choice, really.
結局は２択に絞られると思います。
It's just if you focus on the two major entrance examinations in your short life as a student or if you learn how to communicate in English.
学生という短い命の中で、２つの入試に合格するためだけに英語を勉強するか、英語でコミュニケーションをとるすべを学ぶのかです。
I chose the latter.
ダイスは後者を選択しました。

In the working society, your communication skills only matter for your success.
社会では、コミュニケーション能力が成功に最も左右します。
English is nothing but a tool.
英語はあくまで道具です。
How long would it take for you to be good at playing a new sport from scratch?
新しいスポーツを一から始めて、上手になるのに一体どれだけ時間がかかると思いますか？
It's rather easier to memorize rules though.
まぁ、ルールを暗記する方が簡単ですけどね。

Long forgotten feelings.
ずっと忘れてしまっていた感情。
Very exciting ones, emotional moments.
とってもワクワクするような感情、感動。
We left them in our childhood, maybe.
きっと子供の頃においてきてしまった感情だろうか。
If you drop something into fire, smoke will come out.
何かを火にくべれば、煙が出る。
If you get something too close to fire, it will catch fire.
何かを火に近づけすぎれば、火がつく。
If you touch a grilled Happyturn rice cracker, you will burn your finger.
炙ったばかりのハッピーターンを触れば、指をやけどする。
These experiences are very very exciting for kids, which we already take them for granted.
そんな、当たり前のことでも、子どもたちにとってはどれも大きな感動だ。
Let's not forget them so that we can understand kids better and handle them more smartly.
子どもの感動のスイッチを忘れなければ、きっともっとよく子どもたちを理解できるし、賢く導くこともできる気がする。

時々長野に住んでいて、そういったものが本当に必要なのだろうかと感じます。

Balance is a tricky word in learning English conversation, not English in compulsory education.
バランス良くという言葉には、誰もが注意しなくてはいけない。義務教育は別として、英会話においては特にそれが言える。
In my theory, a significant amount of its sounds must stay in your head before even reading it.
私の理論では、読む前よりももっと先に、かなりの量の音を頭に蓄えておかなくてはならない。
Writing? Don't even think about it until second year in junior high school.
では書くことについては？それは、本来なら中学二年生まで書き取りをしようなどと検討すらすべきでないのだ。
Why?
なぜか？
Because you will have no choice but to replace unknown English sounds with Japanese ones if you don't have enough amount of the sounds in your head.
それは、頭に蓄えた英語の音が不十分だと、日本語の音を英単語に割り振ってしまうからだ。
